REVIEW: Fiddler on the Roof, Stage One Youth Theatre, Ferneham Hall, Fareham

11:23am Tuesday 12th June 2012 By Karen Robson

Fiddler On The Roof is here presented in the mode of a Yiddish folktale, focusing on Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman, his five daughters and life in in Tsarist Russia when persecution was on the rise and change was in the air.

The ever-versatile set and obvious attention to detail went a long way to create a believable sense of the community and the way of life.

The material was handled with perception and a good sense of pace.

There were some excellent set pieces, the most impressive being the dream sequence.

At its heart were some mature and multi-layered performances.

Josh Dennis belied his youth with a careworn yet resilient Tevye, anchoring the whole production with consumate ease.

He was matched by a peerless Katie Winter as Golde, his wife.

The pairings of their three eldest daughters and partners worked well, creating some beautifully tender moments.

This was a rich and rewarding production.

Letter, emails to Stage One

A very enjoyable performance last evening - congratluations to Jacqui et al, a lot of difficult stage setting changes which were handles well. The individual performances were very strong.

Paul liked it so much he wants to be informed of future performances.....well done and thanks for an enjoyable evening

With kind regards and best wishes from
David Tooke

To everyone at Stage One,

Congratulations.............every time I see a production I think, well they can't top that..........And this time you did it in spades !!!

Our party were in age between 8 and 70 years and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the whole production.
From the lighting to the set moving, from the smallest member of cast to the lead singers and everyone inbetween, the costumes and the 'magic' movable sets we were all transported to the very poor villiage and shared their joys, secrets and sorrows.

WELL DONE EVERYONE. Now beat that with Oklahoma !!!!!

Best wishes to you all
Jean Sartain.

Travelled down from Scotland especially to see Stage One Youth Theatre Production, as my dear grandson Charles was a Russian in it. I came on 2
nights, so really enjoyed the show. Wonderful to see a lovely young group doing so well.
Congratulations to all concerned, each person involved is important. Now looking forward to Oklahoma in February 2013.
Best wishes,
Valerie Hone.

Hello to you both,
Just had to thank you for the production of Fiddler on the Roof. As usual the powerful voices of everyone taking part were brilliant, particularly Tevye and Golde. They both had such a lot to learn but of course, they were so ably supported by every other member of the cast.
I so much admire everyones' dedication. This was obvious from their wonderful voices and could only have come from their regular rehearsals.
I shall look forward to Oklahama in February.
Warmest Regards, Daphne (Baker).

Jenny, Jean, Sheila & Rosemary would like to thank Stage One fpr an evening of unalloyed pleasure. Tou were splendid.
Could we give a special thanks to the orchestra - perfectly restrained,
- the set design & construction team, such ingenuity (& the stagehands too),
- the principals who portrayed majority well beyond what might be expected,
- Josh Dennis, a worthy successor to Tom Stammers
- Choreography team - aoll those dancing in such a small place,
and not least the informative programme and everyone who had a hand in a truly memorable production.
