WORTHY CLASSIC

Les Miserables –
School Edition
Ferneham Hall, Fareham

This is Victor Hugo’s classic with some of the rough edges of 19th Century France smoothed to make it more palatable for the younger players – but there’s still something disconcerting about seeing school age kids acting as whores and revolutionaries.
However, the principal’s performances couldn’t be faulted. Paul Clements as the tragic hero at the heart of the story, Jean Valjean, has a tremendous presence.

In a show with such weighty themes, the comic criminals, the Thenardiers, provide welcome relief. SeanRidley and Lauren Golledge mug for all their worth.

Thankfully the cast of the Stage One Youth Theatre Company don’t overact in the way that some child actors do. There were some flat notes among the chorus, but the sets and the costume design more than made up for this.
