Fiddler On The Roof is here presented in the mode of a Yiddish folktale, focusing on Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman, his five daughters and life in in Tsarist Russia when persecution was on the rise and change was in the air.
The ever-versatile set and obvious attention to detail went a long way to create a believable sense of the community and the way of life.
The material was handled with perception and a good sense of pace.
There were some excellent set pieces, the most impressive being the dream sequence.
At its heart were some mature and multi-layered performances.
Josh Dennis belied his youth with a careworn yet resilient Tevye, anchoring the whole production with consumate ease.
He was matched by a peerless Katie Winter as Golde, his wife.
The pairings of their three eldest daughters and partners worked well, creating some beautifully tender moments.
This was a rich and rewarding production.
