Tuesday 26th February 2013 in Curtain Call By Karen Robson.
THE exuberant musical with the shade of darkness, the story revolves around rivalry between cattlemen and farmers and two suitors for the same farm girl Laurey.
Stage One’s production effectively captured the shifts in tone from light to dark with sure footed confidence. The increasingly nightmarish and sinister dream sequence at the culmination of Act 1 had real force and the power to disconcert.
While the choreography was occasionally a little over fussy when it counted the show delivered on perfectly formed, rumbustious company numbers. The production was anchored by some impressive central performances.
From the very first notes of Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ Matt Fisher (Curly) announced the arrival of a significant stage presence and commanded proceedings for the rest of the night. He was well matched by Ellie Jones as Laurey.
